oh, mother

It wasn’t too long ago one of my BFFs posted about the mommy wars that are all too common on the interwebs. Most commonly, you hear women comparing the challenges of being a SAHM or WOHM  (which, to be honest, was an entirely new acronym for me … but I like it!) and which is “harder”. I don’t like to put my thoughts out there all the time on such heated topics because I’m too sensitive to get flamed. the graduate

How in the great wide world did this happen? My baby boy, I swear born just yesterday, graduated from kindergarten today. As per his requirement request, I found him a balloon … one balloon because he is “going into the first grade.” And, as my luck would have it, the exit I needed to take was closed today so as any mother (who was trying to make her child happy) would do, I used the “Authorized Vehicles Only” turn-around to get off on the next closest exit. The 2012 kindergarten field trip is in the books.

We started with this:

And, as per usual, Connor played the part of a rock star scoring two spares and the ever-elusive-except-when-gutters-are-present strike.

The zoo was our next stop. We ate, played, raced through the exhibits (certain children do not understand what it means to stop and appreciate the animals) and stopped at the preferred destination … the gift shop.

Connor said his favorite exhibit was the snakes. We didn’t see the snakes but one found it’s way home with us:

flowers for moms

I’ll never forget on what seemed like my fortieth visit to the lactation consultants at Bronson when one of the nurses told me Connor had an old soul. I wasn’t really sure what it meant but I felt like I had seen that in him, even at four weeks. He just seemed … older; like he had so much more insight into the world than even I, his own mom, had given him credit for. I’ve seen this trait manifest itself several more times since then; most recently, on Mother’s Day. Continue reading
