moments

Did you know that if you live what’s considered an “average” lifetime, you will breathe for roughly 36,816,480 minutes? I didn’t either until just now. Thanks, Google.

How many of those minutes will you remember, though? How many of those minutes will become moments? To me, moments differ from minutes. Moments are important; they are significant; they will not be forgotten.

I’ve had several moments in my (shorter in comparison) life thus far. I was fortunate enough to have another one this past weekend. I celebrated with my cousin, Tiffany, as she married her best friend, Andrew. The moment came just before Tiffany walked down the aisle. She stood arm in arm with her brother, Nick, who would walk with her and ultimately, bear the responsibility of giving her away.

My inability to capture what happened next was a result of another moment in the past … watching them become inseparable while their dad was fighting cancer. Nick proudly escorted Tiffany and the tears flowed freely from my eyes; camera shaking along with my emotion.

I guess “capturing” in this moment was two-fold. I was attempting to capture Tiffany and Andrew’s wedding with my camera (and so was my amazing sister), but I was able to capture the emotion that everyone in the chapel felt … for them, and with them.

At the end, I hugged Nick tightly as he walked back and told him I was proud of him. I heard my mom say, “You were born to do this.” Her words could not have been more true. Uncle Steve would be so proud.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. – Hilary Cooper

sometimes, quotes help

I’m not sure if Pinterest is behind the massive number of quotes floating around the InterWebs as of late, but I have to admit … I don’t hate it. As a person who talks a lot, thinks a lot and writes some, words can be extremely powerful to me. I appreciate the sharing of inspirational quotes. Too often, we hear things throughout the day that bring us down; take us back to reality, if you will. A well-timed quote (or Bible passage), however, can immediately improve my spirits. It may be brief and some people may think I’m crazy … I would also bet they don’t feel the same way about quotes … but it’s possible. And sometimes, all I need is possible.

Tonight, I needed a quote. I started with Pinterest. Sure, there were several I already pinned that I like, but then I remembered this one that a friend shared via email last night:

Life is like a camera: focus on what’s important, capture the good times, & develop from the negatives.  ~Unknown~

I liked it. I liked it a lot. Why? I like pictures. I like words. I like feeling better.

the graduate

How in the great wide world did this happen? My baby boy, I swear born just yesterday, graduated from kindergarten today. As per his requirement request, I found him a balloon … one balloon because he is “going into the first grade.” And, as my luck would have it, the exit I needed to take was closed today so as any mother (who was trying to make her child happy) would do, I used the “Authorized Vehicles Only” turn-around to get off on the next closest exit. I’m pretty sure I would have been considered “Authorized” today, right? Continue reading

a short story

The 2012 kindergarten field trip is in the books.

We started with this:

And, as per usual, Connor played the part of a rock star scoring two spares and the ever-elusive-except-when-gutters-are-present strike.

The zoo was our next stop. We ate, played, raced through the exhibits (certain children do not understand what it means to stop and appreciate the animals) and stopped at the preferred destination … the gift shop.

Connor said his favorite exhibit was the snakes. We didn’t see the snakes but one found it’s way home with us:

And now, I feel like this guy:

Good night.

The end.
