why i miss monday nights

For the last seventy or so weeks (ok, 13ish), I’ve been glued to the tv on Monday nights. It’s not always at the same time (DVR, for the win!), but I usually tune in on Monday to watch the trainwreck otherwise known as The Bachelorette.

Now, I know what you’re gonna say … ‘Seriously?! It’s not real! You can’t fall in love in six weeks. No one ever gets/stays married!’ And my response would be … Everyone is entitled to their opinion. In fact, I even took a vow with two of my good friends once to never.watch.again. I can’t say what season it was (because I don’t recall) but somehow, like a fish takes the bait, I was lured back in. I am now officially a part of “The Bachelor Nation.” Wow, that does read as corny as I thought it would. Continue reading

Isn’t it unbelievably amazing how quickly a newborn morphs into a little human being? Melanie and Jason were kind enough to ask me to come take some photos of their sweet baby girl and I got to experience first-hand the many faces of Eleanor. Oh, and I won’t say that I hated having to pick her up and snuggle with her throughout the session. Well, all except for when her mom needed me to pick up couches and other potential obstacles. day trips

(warning: long-winded, photo-heavy post ahead)

Connor came out of my room yesterday morning and his first comment was,  (with his as serious as he can possibly muster face) “Mom, I’m not going to that party with you today.” Oh, you may have noticed I said that he came out of my room … yeah, well, we had a sleepover Friday night. Don’t judge me. Continue reading

clear sense of direction

I still remember thumbing through my parents’ atlas as a young traveler. When we would make the long hike to Florida, I would study it for hours (because what else are you going to do in a van for 20 hours (or more) besides fight with your sister or play foot races on the ceiling with one of your bffs? true stories.) always knowing what state we were in, what town we might hit next and where I’d like to travel when I grew up.  Continue reading

things that are temporary

Image

As I get, ahem, older, I guess I’m realizing there are certain things that really are fleeting. You may recall I just got my hairs cut not that long ago. Well, not that long ago is ten weeks now and actually, in really big news, I made an appointment the last time I was in and will be getting more hairs cut … tomorrow.

I think logically, I knew that my hair would start to grow again but taking that step to really make a change was so hard. I might have also shared that my hair is a security blanket of sorts so it’s tough to part with something so cozy; although this 90-degree weather is making me completely appreciate shorter hair. Yuk.

Anyway, this isn’t all about hair. I mean it is, but it isn’t. The point is, I’ve learned to let go of some of those fears and anxieties over things that are not going to matter a hill of beans ten years from now. Short hair now? It can be down to the ground by then. Kid want a mohawk? Eh, it’ll grow back. Besides, I’ve never seen him so thoroughly explain exactly how he wanted his hair to look and smile so widely afterward. So for that reason (and that one alone!), I’m glad Connor looks like Mr. T. (old A-Team reference thanks to his dad).

freedom isn’t free

One more celebration of our nation’s independence is in the books. I blogged about oohing and aahing over several fireworks displays and enjoying a small-town parade. But, it was a conversation I had with an old friend today that reminded me again about why freedom is worth celebrating.  Continue reading

We’ve been praying for Nathaniel for the last several months. He was deployed to Afghanistan last summer and returned safely back to the States in early May. Thankfully, he and his family were able to visit this past weekend while he’s enjoying a month’s (much-deserved!) leave. Apologies in advance for the photo overload. Continue reading
